This second blog post in 2019 continues our mission of raising social media afterlife awareness. As part of our effort to enable meaningful dialogue about laying a loved one's online profiles to rest, Profile Peace is creating a continuing education (CE) event on the topic of social media and funerals. This program will provide vital information on social media as it relates to the social science of funerals. During this 1 hour informational session, we will share practical guidance funeral directors and families can use to address concerns about a decedent’s social media profiles. First, we will begin with a brief history of social media, dating back to 1997. Next, we will examine the adoption of social media across generations using recent data from the Pew Research Center, and explore the statistics behind various methods Americans use to communicate with family members. Then, we will explore the different ways family, friends, colleagues and the community can be impacted by a decedent’s social media profiles from a social network’s use of personal information in data algorithms. Lastly, we will discover pre-need and at-need planning approaches for closing or memorializing a decedent’s social media profiles. Upon completion of this program, you will gain a clear understanding of the concerns family member’s can have about a decedent’s social media profiles, and become familiar with the solutions and services available to address those concerns as part of modern-day funeral planning. Funeral directors and interested parties are encouraged to enter your name and email address below to be notified when registration opens. Thank you for supporting the Profile Peace 2019 mission of raising social media afterlife awareness as we help online profiles of the deceased rest in peace.
